Credit Card Terms to Check Before You Apply
Compare costs, rewards, and conditions using a checklist that fits your real spending.

Start with the cost of carrying a balance
A card’s annual percentage rate, or APR, affects the cost of carrying a balance. Many cards list a range, and the rate you receive can depend on the issuer’s criteria. The promotional rate, when offered, may apply only for a stated period or to certain transactions.
If you usually carry a balance, compare the interest terms and promotional conditions before looking at rewards. An attractive points rate may not offset recurring interest for your situation. Check the current offer directly with the issuer.
Add every recurring fee
Look for the annual fee, late-payment fee, foreign transaction fee, balance-transfer fee, and any charge for additional cards. Not every card has all of these fees. Review the product’s current pricing table rather than relying on an old comparison.
Calculate the value of a recurring fee using benefits you can actually use. A benefit that requires extra spending or a separate enrollment step may not be worth its advertised amount to you.
Read how the rewards work
Check eligible purchase categories, caps, exclusions, redemption choices, expiration rules, and any minimum required to redeem. Rewards rules can change and differ from one product to another.
Keep your usual spending pattern in view. A higher advertised reward in a category you rarely use may be less useful than a simpler structure. Avoid buying more just to earn rewards.
Understand the offer and approval process
A sign-up offer can have a spending requirement and a deadline. Check which purchases count and whether returns or cash-like transactions are excluded. Review the eligibility terms before applying.
Submitting an application may involve a hard credit inquiry and does not guarantee approval. If you are comparing options, first check whether the issuer offers a prequalification process and what that process does to your credit file.
A PRACTICAL NEXT STEP
Download the current pricing disclosure and compare its fee, APR, rewards rules, and introductory offer side by side.
