Connect Your Investing Time Horizon to Risk
A thoughtful investing plan starts with when you need the money and how much uncertainty you can accept.

Start with the date you may need the money
Money needed soon may have less time to recover from a market decline than money intended for a distant goal. Identify the goal date before choosing an investment approach.
Plans can change. Review the time horizon when your goal, income, or access needs shift rather than relying on a one-time estimate.
Know what volatility can feel like
Market values rise and fall. An investment that has a chance of higher long-term returns may also experience larger declines along the way. Past performance does not ensure future results.
Ask yourself how you would respond if the account value dropped while the goal remained the same. This is a useful planning question; it cannot predict how a particular investment will perform.
Understand diversification
Diversification spreads exposure across investments rather than concentrating everything in one company or category. It can reduce some concentration risks but cannot eliminate investment risk or guarantee a gain.
Check what a fund actually owns, its expense ratio, and whether several holdings overlap. Product names alone may not reveal the portfolio exposure.
Consider taxes and costs
Investment accounts may have different tax rules, withdrawal restrictions, and contribution limits. Those rules depend on account type and personal circumstances.
Review fees and account documents, and seek qualified tax or financial advice for your situation. Avoid making a decision based only on a calculator’s illustrative return assumption.
A PRACTICAL NEXT STEP
Write down your goal date, what losses you could tolerate, and which fees apply before choosing products.
